Burundi will join the East African Payment System by December 2026, enabling real-time cross-border payments and advancing efforts to reduce reliance on foreign currencies in regional trade.
The Bank of the Republic of Burundi told a meeting of East African central bank governors in Kampala, Uganda, in July that its integration into the East African Payment System (EAPS) is targeted for completion in four months, marking a significant milestone in Burundi's contribution to regional payment-system harmonisation.
