Everything is not about money.” That was Edrisah Kenzo Musuuza’s response to a journalist in 2021. The Ugandan singer popularly known as Eddy Kenzo had just turned down a lucrative endorsement deal from a European alcoholic beverage company due to his Islamic beliefs.
The deal, worth $290,000 — about one billion Ugandan shillings— had stunned many Ugandans. Many struggled to understand why anyone, let alone a man who rose from Kampala's dusty ghettos with his 2014 breakout hit Sitya Loss, would walk away from such a life-changing payday.
