On Saturday, June 7, the Ngugi family hosted a memorial tribute to the literary icon in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Akazi Gallery. The venue was befitting to the broader ethos of Ngugi’s work in social justice, because Atlanta is the home of the civil rights movement and the proverbial “Black Mecca” for people of African roots, a perfect setting for the struggle for the full emancipation of African people on the continent.

The two-and-a-half-hour memorial featured a mixture of Gikuyu music, recitations of sections of Ngugi’s works, and live visual arts presentations.
