AGNES OSWAHA (SOUTH SUDAN)
After fleeing civil war in South Sudan, Agnes Oswaha has used all means at her disposal to help others who are in the same situation. Agnes co-founded the ‘Hearts of Angels for Health-Sudan Initiative’, a non-profit organisation focused on improving health and empowering Sudanese women and men to overcome their traumatic pasts. She is also involved with the Southern Sudanese Women’s Association which helps newly resettled Sudanese in Washington to adjust to life in America. Oswaha has consistently lobbied the US Congress to stop the genocide in Darfur, in 2006 as a board member and chair of Sudanese Outreach for Save Darfur Washington. She has received several awards such as the Karin Stromberg Award for Contribution to Social Justice and Academic Excellence (2004-2005) at the University of Washington and a Certificate of Honour from the Equatorian Sudanese Community Association of Washington (2004).
