As Tamas Buzas waited at the immigration checkpoint at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi in April, he spotted an advert offering an escape from another wait he expected soon after – for a local SIM card. He didn’t hesitate to try it.

It was a smartphone application that offered a way to pay or send money to local mobile money or bank accounts without the need for a local SIM card or mobile money wallet.
