The Port of Mombasa is grappling with a crisis due to an escalating backlog of empty containers, blocking handling of containerised cargo and impacting regional trade by increasing operation costs.
The container crisis, which stems from a combination of factors, among them the influx of cargo throughput, delays by shipping lines to return empties, and global trade imbalances where Mombasa exports less than imports, has led to stretching of its existing capacity, contributing to a build-up of containers.
