Ethiopia saves $1bn on wheat imports as local production rises
Through the expansion of irrigated farming, the use of improved seed varieties and the adoption of modern farming techniques, Ethiopia has significantly increased its wheat yield and marketable surplus.
Ethiopia says it has cut its annual wheat imports worth $1 billion as part of a broader plan to attain food security and reverse forex outflows by improving local production.
It is a development that has also aroused criticism on the way Africa’s second most populous country has been collating data on wheat production.
