Long-serving Ethiopian military chief Gen Samora Yenus has been retired, the Prime Minister's office announced on Thursday.

Gen Samora's position has been taken by his deputy, Gen Seare Mekonen, the PM's office said.

Gen Samora was part of the 1970-1990 guerrilla struggle by the Tigrian rebels against the Ethiopian military regime of Mengistu Hailemariam.

Various positions

The 69-year-old General later served as a commander and division head, playing a significant role in the Ethiopia-Eritrea border war. He was promoted to the Army Chief level in 2001.

General Saere also emerged from liberation struggle of Tigrian People Liberation Front (TPLF) and later served in various positions in the Ethiopian military.

The state TV also announced the replacement of the National Intelligence and Security Services minister, Mr Getachew Assafa, with Gen Adem Mohamed.
Gen Adem previously served as the Ethiopian Air-force chief.

Economic reforms

Mr Getachew was blamed for gross human rights abuses, including the inhumane treatment of prisoners since 2001.

Ethiopia is undergoing fast-paced political and economic reforms under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who took over office two months ago.

Mr Abiy's ascendance followed the surprise resignation of Mr Hailemariam Desalegn.

The vast and populous country has struggled with massive public protest and violence for the last three years, but a semblance of stability has been restored since Mr Abiy took charge.
