With one hour remaining to Christmas, Telesphore Munezero and his family went to bed at around 11pm ready for the big day in the morning, having planned to have a meal together in the morning before they headed out to church.
But what happened in the dead of the night left Munezero and his family traumatised and perhaps experience the worst Christmas in many years.
