Luxury car owners face higher fees on plates in Uganda's $8bn budget

Uganda on Wednesday released budget estimates for the financial 2016/2017 targeting to raise Ush26.361 trillion ($7.8 billion), a significant reflection of the latest government promises to invest more resources in infrastructure, a move that will see taxpayers dig deep in their pockets.

Though on the overall, general tax increment was avoided, the budget presented by President Yoweri Museveni targets owners of luxury personalised number plates, a common status symbol for rich vehicle holders, who will be subjected to a tax increase of more than 300 per cent from Ush5 million ($1,498) to Ush20 million ($5,992).
