In 2012, solar-powered streetlights reached roads across Mogadishu, which had been dark every night for years. For many residents, they became one of the first visible signs that public authority was returning.
They improved security and made movement easier, but their significance reached beyond either. The lights kept shops open, restored movement after dark, and helped residents reclaim ordinary civic life.
