I am a hopelessly last-minute person, and it is getting worse as I grow older. Catching a flight is a Hail Mary throw, each time. Early this week, that typical last-minute rush happened as news broke about the Iranian retaliatory strikes on American military bases in Qatar and Iraq – resulting in the temporary closure of some airspaces.

My flight was routing via Dubai and, for hours, it was unclear whether the flight would leave at all. A Kenyan security official commented on the “craziness of travelling to the Middle East in these times,” never mind that Kenya itself is home to American military bases. In these fast-changing moments, when warmongering is on steroids, nowhere is safe.
