UK Prime Minister Starmer to quit as Burnham waits in the wings
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks outside 10 Downing Street, following Andy Burnham's decisive victory last week in the Makerfield by-election, in London, Britain, June 22, 2026.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday he would resign, with a new leader to be in place by the time parliament returns in September.
Less than two years after he won a landslide election victory that promised to end chaos in British politics, Starmer said he would support whoever replaced him.
