The Angolan government has granted its citizens a two-day public holiday during the visit of US President Joe Biden.

The US leader arrived in Luanda on Monday and held talks with President João Lourenço on Tuesday before visiting the country's National Museum of Slavery to commemorate the two nations' shared history in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Residents of Luanda province have been given a holiday for what the government described as "exceptional contingency measures to ensure safety", while announcing traffic restrictions on some roads.

President Biden is also visiting the municipalities of Benguela, Lobito and Catumbela on Wednesday, where residents have also been granted a public holiday.

President Biden is expected to visit the Lobito Corridor, a multinational partnership of African governments co-funded by the US to help transport minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Angola.
