At least 32 people were killed and 84 others wounded in multiple suicide bombings in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state on Saturday.
Suspected Boko Haram jihadists using six young girls as suicide bombers denoted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the town of Damboa.
The blasts targeted people who were returning from the Eid al-Fitr fete at about 8:30pm local time.
“The whole of Damboa was shaken by the unfortunate incident. We all scampered for safety as the blasts were coming from different directions. There were bodies everywhere,” said Buba Shettima, an eyewitness.
“The attacks came from two separate directions. My house was among some of the houses destroyed,” another eyewitness, Mohammed Hassan, said.
The suicide bombers detonated their explosives in Shuwari and Abachari neighbourhoods in the town.
Borno Commissioner of Police, Mr Damian Chukwu confirmed the bombings.
“The wounded and the dead were evacuated to a hospital while the scene was sanitised by police," he said, adding that “investigation is ongoing to unravel the nature of the attack.”
