Nigeria's Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo escaped unhurt after his helicopter crashed on his way to an election campaign rally.

Prof Osinbajo, in a Tweeter message, said he was "safe and sound".

He thanked the crew of the aircraft for the way they handled the situation in Kabba, Kogi State in mid west Nigeria.

Were unhurt

Prof Osinbajo and President Muhammadu Buhari are seeking re-election on February 16.

President Buhari's main rival, Mr Atiku Abubakar, tweeted his relief that the vice-president and his team were unhurt.

Prof Osinbajo, 61, continued on the campaign trail for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party after the crash on Saturday afternoon, tweeting footage from a bus of him waving at the crowds.

Twelve people were on board the ill-fated helicopter.
