Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir swore in new Prime Minister Moutaz Mousa Abdallah on Monday alongside Second-Vice President Mohamed Osman Kibir at a ceremony in Khartoum.

The move comes after President Bashir on Sunday sacked the 31-member cabinet and appointed a new prime minister in an attempt to tackle the growing economic crisis.

Prior to his appointment, Mousa served as the minister of electricity and irrigation while Kibir formerly served as governor of North Darfur state.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Bashir admitted that the country was going through a difficult economic condition and commended the people for their resilience in the past few months.

He announced that the newly adopted measures aimed at cutting the government expenditure and improving performance of the public sectors.

Bashir added that the new government will be formed in ‘the next few days’.

“The priorities of the new government will focus on how to implement the financial cut which include the presidency, ministerial and state levels,” he said.

Sudanese economy is grappling with an acute foreign exchange shortage and inflation of above 65 per cent as well as increased trade deficit.
