How foreign forces, arms are complicating Sudan war

The Sudan war is the biggest crisis currently in Africa, but which has been ignored.

And Murithi Mutiga, Africa programme director at International Crisis Group, says it is “a war of the future,” due to the calibre of weapons and munitions involved.

“War is a rural phenomenon. Very few wars happen in cities or capitals. When war breaks out in the capital, you lose your middle class within a day. We saw in Sudan the educated classes - the most talented - the business classes, move out in days. That makes the work of the construction much harder. The capital is usually the place where people feel the highest degree of security. The logic of war is to acquire the power of the state. But when you fight in the capital, you are destroying the essence of the state - the heart of the country. And, again, that makes the work of reconstruction much harder. The logic of war is fighting in the rural areas then come to the capital and take control and end the war. In Sudan they have destroyed the heart of the country,” he said.
