Uganda's ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will chose candidates for various elective positions by lining up behind them, the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) has resolved.

The decision was arrived at during the ongoing party retreat at the Chobe Safari Lodge in Nwoya District in northern Uganda.

CEC, the highest organ of the NRM, is chaired by President Yoweri Museveni.

Being cheated

NRM previously conducted its primary elections using the secret ballot.

However, the system was adjudged to be prone to abuse, with some candidates bolting after claiming being cheated of their victories.

NRM spokesman Rogers Mulindwa said lining up behind candidates was aimed at reducing the cost of conducting internal elections.

Resource mobilisation

He said it would reduce the number of petitions filed by those who were dissatisfied with the outcome of the ballot process, adding that it would also enhances transparency because losing candidates could easily see that fewer people lined behind them.

The party secretariat, Mr Mulindwa said, would soon release a detailed programme for the district conferences to further consider the proposal.

CEC also set up a subcommittee, chaired by the First National Vice Chairman, Mr Hajji Moses Kigongo, to enhance resource mobilisation for the party.
