The government says the farms were idle for some years.
Tanzania has revoked ownership of six farms with approximately 12,915.126 hectares owned by Mohamed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd (MeTL), whose majority shares are held by Mohamed Dewji.
“The decision was reached after realising the farms were idle for some years now,” said Angeline Mabula, Deputy Minister for Land, Housing and Human Settlements Development.
The six properties — in Tanga — were the part of the 14 farms that the government had allocated to MeTL.
The remaining eight farms will be monitored by the government to ensure that the land is being used productively, said Ms Mabula.
The revocation of the title deeds follows a proposal advanced by the Korogwe district council to the ministry.
Tanga Regional Commissioner Martin Shigela told the residents of Korogwe not to invade lands until the Korogwe District Council and the central government complete a land use plan.
In 2017, the government revoked ownership of 800 acres of farmland held by former prime minister Frederick Sumaye and his wife.
