As Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda booked their places in the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), young men and women in the region screamed themselves hoarse in small-town squares and crowded pubs.

But beyond the frenzy of this football-for-the-people championship, another story loomed, as though East Africa were rehearsing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the three countries will jointly host.
