At least eight security officers were killed Sunday when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Wajir, northeast Kenya, a government official said.

Wajir County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara said the vehicle hit the IED at Bojigaras and the exact number of casualties was yet to be confirmed.

Deadly attacks

Reports indicated that the dead were five police officers and three reservists.

Somali insurgents Al-Shabaab have claimed several deadly attacks in Kenya, especially near the border.
