Shaky mandate for Cameroon’s Paul Biya as win queried, unrest surges
President Paul Biya, 92, speaks while he stands next to his wife Chantal Biya during the launch of his electoral campaign, in Maroua, Cameroon on October 7, 2025.
As widely predicted, 92-year-old Paul Biya has won an eighth term to extend his 43-year power grip on Cameroon for seven more years to 2032.
The Constitutional Council, Cameroon’s highest judicial body on electoral matters whose members are appointed by Biya, declared him winner of the October 12 election, with 53.66 percent of the votes cast.
