Cameroon’s longtime President Paul Biya has ring-fenced his eighth term bid with top rivals barred from running, generating tensions in its wake. But, even as it now appears he is guaranteed to run against softer competition, critics say his ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) must now start thinking of who comes after him.
Biya has been at the helm for 43 years but, since winning the 2018 election, he reduced his public appearances even as he tightened the power grip, running affairs through his trusted lieutenants.
