A Ugandan film that tells the story of the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Janani Luwum, who stood up against President Idi Amin’s dictatorial regime and paid dearly with his life 47 years ago, won two awards at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) 2025.
The murder of the archbishop under the orders of Amin has been immortalised in the movie Janani: The Last Stand by the local film maker Matt Bish. The biopic/drama is about Luwum (played by Peter Odeke), showcasing his courageous stand against Amin and celebrating its festival journey. Archbishop Luwum was a leading voice in criticising the excesses of the Idi Amin regime that assumed power in 1971.
