A photograph that captures the precarious nature and scarcity of road transport in rural areas won the 2014 overall Uganda Press Photo Award in the Daily Life category.
The image titled I Do, by Abu Mwesigwa that was published in the New Vision last year, shows a couple and their bridal entourage crammed into a sedan after a Uganda People’s Defence Forces mass wedding at Katama Army Barracks in Masindi in western Uganda.
Frederic Noy, a member of the jury, said, “Mwesigwa managed to be close to the action, but in this picture he keeps a distance from his subjects. It is a very well composed picture and the flash was used well. This picture tells a good story about one of the daily moments in the country.”
Mwesigwa went home with a certificate and a new Nikon D300s DSLR camera sponsored by the US Mission to Uganda.
The awards ceremony was held at the Makerere Art Gallery, Margaret Trowel School of Fine Art, Makerere University in Kampala on October 15. The exhibition will run up to November 8, at the same venue.
“This recognition is a moment to cherish,” Mwesigwa said.
The News category award went to Colleb Mugume for his photo about mob justice titled Against the Miniskirt. A photograph of a snake swallowing a lizard in Mabira Forest in Central Uganda won Matthias Mugisha the Nature award.
