Buhanga Forest is situated in Nyakinama village, eight kilometres west of Musanze town in Northern Province. It is a sacred forest of immense cultural and historical importance to Rwanda.
“Buhanga means creation. This forest derives its name from the fact that the creation of Rwanda began from here. The first king of Rwanda was known as Gihanga (Kinyarwanda for creator) because he founded the kingdom from here,” our guide said of the forest, which is little known to visitors and even Rwandans.
