Saba Saba, a day often synonymous with protests and demands for democratic reform in Kenya, observed every July 7, is notably not a public holiday. In stark contrast, Tanzania commemorates Saba Saba as a day of national unity.
On Monday, as Kenyans engaged in street battles with police, resulting in deaths and dozens of injuries, Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, buzzed with activity. Merrymaking, shopping, entertainment and vibrant personal interactions converged at the Julius Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds along Kilwa Road.
