If it’s a Tyler Perry movie, you know you are getting a good dose of melodrama, but Doing Life feels like one of his most grounded love stories in years. It doesn’t lean into the exaggerated characters and situations we often associate with his work. Instead, it has this sense of restraint, a focus on realism, and a commitment to telling a story that comes closer to everyday life.

Doing Life, written and directed by Perry, was released on Netflix on October 2, 2026. It stars Naomi Baker as Anika, a single mother and former prison officer, and Jay Reeves as Carousel, a reformed ex-convict who once protected her during a violent prison riot. Their bond begins through letters, not emails or text messages, letters exchanged while Carousel is incarcerated, and the film follows how that fragile connection grows into something deeper once he is released.
