The East African Community (EAC) Council of Ministers has granted preferential tax treatment to imports of various items, which will see the cost of some imported goods significantly surge over the next 12 months, in efforts to promote local industries.
One of these items is baby diapers, whose import duty has been raised from 25 percent to 35 percent to protect local manufacturers and create jobs in Kenya, Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania.
