Sixteen Tanzanian MPs travelling to Kenya were injured on Friday when their bus collided with a lorry in Mbande area of Dodoma region at around 2am.

Two parliamentary officers and the driver of the bus were also injured in the incident.

The legislators were travelling to Mombasa for the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games.

Speaking to The Citizen's sister paper, Mwananchi, Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC) George Katabazi said all the injured were in stable condition.

“They are receiving treatment at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital, Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, and Uhuru Hospital,” he said.

The police boss also said the bus driver has been arrested. "The cause of the accident is that the bus driver carrying MPs and parliamentary officers didn’t observe caution while overtaking a vehicle, leading to a head-on collision with the lorry.”

"My call is for everyone to observe traffic safety laws to prevent accidents, which often cause deaths, injuries, and severe damage to properties. Drivers should avoid acts of carelessness and recklessness,” Mr Katabazi stressed.

He added that the police in Dodoma will not tolerate anyone who fails to observe road safety rules.
