Tanzania completes gas wells upgrade, ends scheduled power outages

Tanzania’s scheduled power outages that lasted 10 days are expected to cease Thursday.
Tanzania had scheduled power outages in certain parts of the country since last week as it embarked on the rehabilitation of gas wells and upgrade of infrastructure to improve distribution of electricity to residents.
Irene Marobe, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco)’s Public Relations Officer, told The EastAfrican on Wednesday that there will be no extra days of outages as a result of the renovations and upgrade.
Bizimana Ntuyabaliwe, the Pan African Energy Tanzania (PAET)’s deputy managing director, said there has been “significant progress” in the reequipping of the country’s natural gas wells in the south.
PAET and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) supply the gas to Tanesco, which owns and operates two gas-fired electricity generation plants in Dar es Salaam.
Mr Ntuyabaliwe said the renovation works entailed installing a “compressing unit” to boost the wells output pressure.
The works were undertaken by China Petroleum Technology Development Company (CPTDC), Mr Ntuyabaliwe added.
Parts of Tanzania have been experiencing power outage since February 1 as the country began upgrading its natural gas wells.
