The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) on Friday took over the chairmanship of the Inter-Regional Economic Communities Coordination Platform.

Igad executive secretary Workneh Gebeyehu took over from Omar Alieu Touray, president of the Ecowas Commission.

The platform serves as a key mechanism for harmonising policies, programmes and initiatives across Africa's RECs, Ecowas, SADC, EAC, Comesa and others.

As the new chair, Igad is expected to lead efforts to address key continental challenges such as trade facilitation, climate change, peace and security, and infrastructure development.

Igad's leadership comes at a critical time as Africa works to deepen its economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and to address transnational issues such as migration, food security and conflict resolution.

Igad underlined its commitment to promoting inclusive dialogue and ensuring that the voices of all member states and regional economic communities are heard.

The organisation also highlighted its intention to prioritise climate resilience and sustainable development, given the region's vulnerability to environmental challenges.

The organisation said its priorities will include harnessing digital innovation and artificial intelligence.

"Igad will work with other RECs to harness these innovations for the continent's development and ensure that technology is a driver of economic growth and resilience," it said.

Igad's chairmanship is expected to last a year, during which it will work closely with the African Union Commission and other stakeholders to advance the continent's development agenda.

“The platform will serve as a mechanism to strengthen Africa's institutional architecture and collective decision-making processes and strengthening collaboration among regional bodies will be key to addressing Africa’s common challenges and maximising opportunities,” Igad said.
