Rwandan President Paul Kagame is set be sworn in on Friday for his third seven-year term, a government official said Thursday.

Mr Kagame won the August 4 presidential election with a landslide victory garnering 98 per cent of the total votes cast against opposition Democratic Green Party flagbearer Frank Habineza and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana.

"The swearing in ceremony is in line with the Rwandan Constitution Article 102 that stipulates that the president-elect takes oath of office within thirty days following his or her election. His or her oath of office is administered by the President of the Supreme Court," said Evode Uwizeyimana, the Constitutional and Legal Affairs minister.

President Kagame is expected to name a prime minister and other Cabinet members next month.

About 20 heads of State and Government from across Africa and the world are expected to attend the inauguration.

The ceremony will be held at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali.

In 2015, a constitutional amendment allowed President Kagame to seek the third term and also permits him to stay in power until 2034 if he so desires.
