The recommendation came after a group of MPs visited 11 centres countrywide, and found them to be in sorry state.
Although they are termed as “transit centres” or “rehabilitation centres,” by the government, Mr Bamporiki said they are managed like “prisons”.
Although new guidelines stipulated that a detainee cannot be held there for more than 72 hours, MPs revealed that many in centres countrywide were held for months, sometimes up to six months.
