Watamu resort, on Kenya's North Coast is a 24-hour, all-year round holiday destination. More of a hamlet than a town, Watamu is known for its rich and varied lifestyle.

Snorkelling: The inviting clear and warm blue waters and the coral reef gardens are a must visit. Teeming with colourful coral fish around the reef, even at low tide, it is a marvel to swim with the fishes.

Yoga: Sail or kayak to the famous Watamu sandbars that pop up during low tide. The sandbars offer warm inviting water that you can frolic in until the tide starts coming in.

Surfing: This is considered a mecca for surfers, thanks to the wide open bay protected by the reef.

Snake park: The Sita Snake Farm on the shores of Mida Creek is run by the local community. Watamu has an incredible snake collection and respect for the much-maligned serpent is obvious at this park.

Sea food: When the sun begins to set, a stop at Crabshack is in order. This community-owned restaurant is only accessible through the dense mangrove forest on Mida Creek via a wooden boardwalk. The mangrove forest in the creek acts as a nursery for turtles and little fish and also a great place for birding, which is done on boat.

EcoWorld Watamu: Promoting health and community wealth, this gallery has fantastic recycled art and boasts of the Bottlenose dolphin made from a thousand wine bottles — a must see.

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest: For its amazing bird life and the Kipepeo Butterfly Farm. You can also see the golden-rumped shrew, which is only found here, forest elephants and rare fauna like the cycads. The forest has walking, jogging and biking trails.

Gedi ruins: This is a historical site run by the National Museums of Kenya. Gedi was once a thriving sultanate and no one knows why it was abandoned.

Malindi: A 30-minute drive away, it is Watamu’s older twin, with world class hotels, sandy beaches, historical sites and Swahili restaurants. The old town has one of the best halwa shops in the country.
