FARHIYO FARAH IBRAHIM (SOMALIA)
At just 25 years old, Farhiyo Farah Ibrahim has faced open hostility from the Somali community for working with the National Council of Churches in Kenya (NCCK). She advocates condom use along with counselling and testing for HIV/Aids and has campaigned against female genital mutilation (FGM). Her father forced her to leave the family for her activism, while was publicly attacked by the Somali community and forced to move back to Dadaab refugee camp (in Kenya) where she was raised. In the camp, she found work as a translator and despite renewed hostilities, she promotes an end to forced marriages and female genital mutilation, support for rape victims and more education for Somali girls. Because of this, in 2008, she was awarded with the International Women of Courage Award in the US.
