WANGU KANJA (KENYA)

Friday August 26 2011

What does not kill you makes you stronger: Wangu Kanja is living proof of this. She went through something more horrifying than many of us can imagine —she was carjacked and raped at gunpoint. Years later, she has risen above her trauma and now reaches out to those in need.
From the challenges and stigma she went through, she founded the Wangu Kanja Foundation that supports survivors of sexual violence, helping them obtainmedical, psychological and legal redress. The foundation also operates a 24-hour crisis line manned by trained professionals to provide counselling services.
Kanja now speaks openly about her nightmare: in schools, churches, places of work and conferences. Fearlessly, she shares her story with the aim of creating awareness about the trauma of sexual assault. She also teaches how to avoid risk situations, and how to survive such an experience and continue to live a normal life.
