Kenyan judge re-elected African Court vice president

A Kenyan judge has been re-elected as vice president of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR).
Justice Ben Kioko will serve his second and final term of six years at the Arusha-based court after garnering 45 votes out of 55 African Union member states.
Tanzanian judge Aboud Imani was also elected to the Court during the 31st Ordinary Session of the AU Summit that is underway in Nauakchottt, Mauritania. He got 47 votes.
Justice Imani, for the Eastern zone, replaces Uganda’s Solomon Bossa who has joined the International Criminal Court.
Others judges who were elected are Tchikaya Blaise from Congo with 44 votes for the Central zone and Nigeria’s Anukam Stella Isibhakhomen with 27 votes for Western zone.
Judges Isibhakhomen replaces El Hadji Gisse of Senegal while Blaise replaces Gerald Niyungeko from Burundi.
The two judges completed their two terms last month.
The African Court was established to enhance protection of human rights and basic freedoms in the continent. It complements the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
