Thursday August 09 2018
Former Nairobi governor has been charged with fraud and abuse of office when he was arraigned on Thursday.
Dr Kidero was charged alongside his former treasury chief Maurice Okere and seven others.
They are accused of causing the county government to lose Ksh213 million ($2.12 million) between January 16, 2014 and January 25, 2016.
They allegedly conspired to commit corruption by authorising payments to various companies for services not rendered.
Dr Kidero is accused of receiving a total of Ksh24 million ($240,000) from Lodwar Wholesalers Ltd on diverse dates.
They have all denied the charges.
Their lawyers have requested that their clients be released on bond.
Dr Kidero was arrested on Wednesday by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officers.
He was the Nairobi County governor from 2013 to 2017.
Registry
Meanwhile, the chief magistrate Douglas Ogoti at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court has directed the registry not to receive any charges filed after 8:30am local time.
Mr Ogoti, who is hearing the case against Dr Kidero, said he "has noted the habit of prosecution bringing suspects to court late in the day".
The court has adjourned for bail ruling.
