Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has reshuffled his Cabinet just two days after surviving a coup attempt.

The president appointed Emmanuel Ntahomvukiye as the minister for Defence in place of Potien Gaciyubwenge and Alain Aime Nyamitwe as Foreign Affairs minister, replacing Laurent Kavakure.

Irina Inantore was also appointed Trade minister, replacing Marie Nizigiyimana.

The changes came as protests continued in some Bujumbura suburbs demanding that the President drops his bid for a third term in office.

The army appeared divided in dispersing the protesters with one group opposed to the use of live bullets.

There also appeared to be some rethink on the election date which regional leaders want pushed forward. The electoral commission said it had formed a technical committee to assess whether the June date was suitable for a free and fair poll.

The ruling CNDD-FDD party said it would abide by the decision of the electoral commission whose independence is also in question.

“What the electoral commission says is what we will follow. If they feel it is not safe and delay the elections it is ok," said Pascal Nyabenda the chairman of CNDD-FDD.
