But influential outside opinion deploys all its vocal powers to not only portray Ingabire as a politician with something legitimate to say, but to make it an offence for the government to take her to court.

Same case with the suspended newspapers.

Why is it that none of the champions of press freedoms seem to think — when it comes to countries like ours — that even members of the African media are subject to laws?

Why not make at least a token effort to find out whether a general has fled for fear of an investigation, or another is jailed for contravening military discipline rather than make immediate assumptions about coups?
