The organisers of the Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) are calling for entries for the 6th annual photo contest.

The annual photography competition is open to all Ugandans aged 18 and above. The award’s objective is to shine a spotlight on the country’s photojournalism and photography talent.

All professional and non-professional Ugandan photojournalists and photographers must submit their works online via the UPPA website; where the guidelines and terms and conditions can be found.

All entries must have been shot between September 1, 2016 and September 1, 2017, and must be submitted by September 1, 2017. Entry is free.

The overall winner will receive a Canon EOS 7D Mark II DSLR camera and a chance to showcase his or her work and be counted among Uganda’s best visual storytellers.

An international panel of judges with years of photography experience will deliberate on which images stand out and best showcase the events of the past year. The 2017 UPPA judges are: Neo Ntsoma, Yasuyoshi Chiba, Annette Sebba, Edward Echwalu, Mulugeta Ayene and Katrin Peters-Klaphake.

There are seven categories from which participants can choose to submit their published or unpublished work: News, daily life, creative, portrait, sports, nature and story.

Winners in all categories will receive prizes and they will be announced during the award-giving and exhibition opening ceremony on October 26, in Kampala.

Muyingo Siraj won the 2016 Uganda Press Photo of the Year award with his image of a child taking shelter from a drizzle while working as a scarecrow to keep birds off a field of crops.

As the competition has steadily gained increased international coverage, it presents an opportunity for Ugandan photographers to showcase their work on the world stage. UPPA’s vision is to see more homegrown talent taking centrestage in the media world.

The competition is organised with support from Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES-Uganda), Canon, Feature Story News and the embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of Uganda (FCAU). --
