PAULA KAHUMBU (KENYA)
One of Kenya’s most influential conservationists, Dr Paula Kahumbu started off by studying monkeys and elephants and went on to work for the Kenya Wildlife Service on wildlife policy, trade and park management issues. She is now the chief executive officer of “WildlifeDirect” (http://wildlifedirect.org), an Internet-based conservation organisation using the web to build a global community of people who care about wildlife in Africa,. The site also provides a platform on which conservationists can blog on developments in the field. Dr Kahumbu has spread her message far and wide through a large personal following on Twitter she has over 4,400 “followers” and has tweeted over 10,000 times. Her use of new technologies and methods in environmental conservation earned her the title of ‘fellow’ for PopTech Social Innovation 2009.
