The magic of ISO certificates in the economy
Posted Monday, February 22 2010 at 00:00
All the sectors represented at the Nairobi Stock Exchange directly (industrial, agriculture) or indirectly have ecological impacts.
Tourism for instance has impacts from the hotel construction stage, and increased visitor numbers and waste management all pose real ecological threats.
Yet a 5-star hotel with environmental certification in a popular destination such as Kenya would look even more attractive.
The ISO14001:2004 certification encompasses even outsourced inputs, and companies with infused environment management protocols have no business sourcing inputs from companies that pollute.
This begs the question, of all our listed money movers in the stock exchanges, who makes the list of the ISO14001 certified companies?
Because the numbers of those listed and ISO certificates just don’t tally.
