The Rwanda Under-21 volleyball team emulated their junior side by finishing third at the CAVB junior tournament in Tunisia for a slot at this year’s FIVB Men’s 21 World Championships in Turkey from August 22 to September 1.
The U-21s, lead by national team coach Paul Bitok, earned their best ranking after defeating Morocco 3-0 (27-25, 27-25, 25-21) in the bronze medal match to beat their previous best fourth position in Libya in 2010.
This was Rwanda’s second ever indoor volleyball medal, following the success of the U-17 team in January.
Tunisia captured their third consecutive African title and the ninth in total after defeating their arch rivals Egypt 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21) in the final.
Meanwhile, the national youth volleyball team has began preparations for this year’s Africa Youth Girls Championships due March 20-30 in Egypt.
The girls entered non-residential training recently under the tutelage of Bitok, who is seeking to once again lead them to the World Championship.
